A Message from AFFT Director and Secretary Jim Bennett

In May I will have time to better serve you in developing the FAIRtax grassroots. I will retire after nearly twenty rewarding years as a New Jersey Deputy Attorney General, and I am excited to start this new adventure.

Why does developing the grassroots matter? Most members of Congress will not co-sponsor, much less advocate for, the FAIRtax until they feel the heat.* We apply heat by turning out in numbers in their districts. My eighth-grade Social Studies teacher, John McDowell, once said that people do not simply hear a message and rise up. People turn out in numbers only when they have leaders to manage them.

Leaders need robust local volunteer grassroots organizations to manage. Yes, organizing seems boring. But Lee Iacocca, who turned Chrysler around, once said that every company needs two types. For sure, a company needs inspired visionaries with ideas and messages, or the jet never takes off.

But a company also needs its “bean counters,” without whom the jet crashes. Grassroots organizing is more like bean counting. Both types working together get the jet all the way to the FAIRtax landing strip.

Some states and districts have many volunteers and effective state and district organizations. Others states and districts have, if anyone, single lone wolves, or something in between. Lone wolves are not enough to put the heat on Congress. My father built a successful law practice and once said that the secret is getting people to work for you. I would add: work with you.

We now have the tool to help you get people working with you and turning out the numbers: the YourMembership database platform. Please don’t forget to sign in and update your profile, at so that we can better communicate. Your e-mail is your initial login, and the initial password is “FAIRtax.” (You can change both. In the off chance you aren’t already in the system, please register.)

This effort will be an outgrowth of the CORS Team (Credentials, Organization, Rules, Structure). I have the privilege of serving on that team with Ron Babin, Roger Buchholtz, and Doug Opbroek. We welcome your help, and I look forward to working with each of you. Let me know what we can do to support you.

Jim Bennett

*Some states are concentrating on state-level FAIRtax legislation. The same principle applies at the state level.

Leaving old comments (like these) on the site without posting a response dramatically reduces credibility. Either remove them or post a response. Thanks.

I'd like to move the FAIRtax forward in Iowa. Are there others working on this in Iowa?
